Plus, you won’t have to do it alone! Our in-house design consultant, Briana, will guide you throughout the process. Ask her any questions you have about the design process, warranties, where to start, etc. See and touch everything for a truly “hands-on” experience. Compare different options side-by-side to see which combinations speak to you. Our Design Studio team puts YOU at the center of the creative process.
How To Design A Home
Keep Your Budget In Mind
Once you begin the design phase, it can be all too easy to go overboard. Our in-house design consultant suggests making a list of your priorities. Price out all of the things that are valuable to you and weigh them out based on price and importance. We’ll work with you to determine how much you can afford and help you stick to it.
Think About Your Style
It’s always good to be prepared with some idea of what you want your home’s style to look like. If you’re not sure what that is yet, start browsing through design photos, magazines, Instagram, Houzz, Pinterest, etc. to get inspiration. Take note of some of the color schemes and styles you like. Do you prefer a more relaxed vibe like coastal or bohemian, or maybe you like bold styles like Hollywood glam or shabby chic? Determining your style or at least your likes and dislikes will be a great help when it comes to your design appointment.
Choosing Your Cabinets
In the open-layout floor plans we offer, the kitchen cabinets and flooring are two of the biggest selection decisions you’ll make. They play a huge role in setting the overall tone for your home’s design. No matter your overall style, there are so many cabinetry options to choose from. Shaker-style cabinets are the most common type and are perfect for a traditional or modern look. Slab, flat panel, raised panel, and beaded styles are also great choices. Once you’ve chosen the style, you’ll move on to finishes and hardware. Keep in mind how you use your space every day. After all, cabinets are for storage and you want to make sure they’re both beautiful AND functional.
Lighting is Key
While our floor plan designs allow for maximum natural light to flow through, a few well-placed and stunning lights will make your home truly shine. As with many of the design selections you choose, make sure it follows the style you’re looking to achieve. Take a look at the cabinet and hardware you chose and find a complementary light fixture. There are three layers when it comes to lighting your home: ambient, task, and accent. Adding layers depending on the room size and room type will make a big difference. For example, the dining room can be used for multiple things besides mealtime (crafts, homework, family game night, etc.). It should be properly lit with a good ambient light source like a chandelier and then accent lights to illuminate parts of the room where ambient light can’t reach.
