Activities and Things to Do in the Winter at the DE Beaches

December 22, 2023

McKee Builders prides itself on choosing the most desirable, scenic, and distinctive locations for our new home communities. For example, our Friendship Creek community is located in two of Delaware’s most charming beach towns.

While living near the beach usually evokes warm, sunny thoughts, the Delaware Beaches are home to more than just sand and sea. There’s something so special about enjoying a beach town during the winter. The slower pace gives them an entirely different vibe. (Just one reason so many people make Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island their home all year round!)

Here are some of the fun things you can do throughout the holidays and winter at the DE Beaches:

  • Schellville Winter Celebration (Nov. 18 – Dec. 31 in Rehoboth). Embrace a fun winter experience with festive lights, local vendors and endless activities. This family-friendly event includes a train ride, roller skating and even the chance to meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
  • Shop Local. Boutiques and unique shops line the streets of downtown Rehoboth, downtown Lewes and Bethany Beach. Get your holiday gifts, support local businesses, and enjoy Delaware’s tax-free shopping at places such as Christmas Spirit, Aquamarine Boutique, and Bethany Beach Books!
  • Sample Seasonal Specialties. Warm up with savory crab cakes from Woody’s Dewey Beach, tacos at Taco Reho or lobster rolls from Matt’s Fish Camp. Savor brunch-time spirits from Nectar Cafe or cocktails and martinis from Bethany Blues.
  • Explore The Outdoors. Be awestruck by the colors of a winter sunset at Fenwick Island State Park. Take a brisk walk on the Junction Breakwater Trail or at Cape Henlopen State Park. Learn about over 100 species of native animals along the Baldwin Trail at the Bethany Beach Nature Center.
  • Become A History Buff.  The Delaware Beaches are packed with museums and historical sites that are part of the Delaware History Trail. At Fort Miles, you can view World War II monuments. Or visit the Lewes Maritime Museum or the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum.
  • The Fire and Ice Festival (Jan. 26 – 28 in Bethany – Fenwick Area). Enjoy a weekend of ice skating, bonfires, ice sculpture tours, local tastings and music. This year’s theme, Into the Wild, will also include a chili cookoff for friendly competition.

There are many wonderful things to do at the Delaware Beaches during the winter. At McKee Builders, we want you to be able to enjoy even more of what this special place has to offer. When you’re ready to explore living near the Delaware Beaches, reach out to us and we’ll help you find a home where you can create plenty of memories.
